Friends find ‘amazing’ treasure trove while metal detecting in Welsh field

Two friends unearthed an “amazing” treasure trove while metal detecting in a Welsh field. Enthusiastic metal detectorists Chris Evans and James Fraser found around 400 Medieval coins in the field on Anglesey.

It could be the largest find of its kind on the island. The pair obtained permission to scour the land in the northwest corner of Anglesey on the weekend before last.

Chris, 47, said: “It was a whopping signal. The beeping nearly blew my ears off! It was amazing.” The duo stumbled upon an extraordinary cache of silver coins, caked in mud but likely dating back over 700 years to the era of renowned castle constructor King Edward I,

As they discovered the coins, a video shows Chris saying: “We’re going to have to phone somebody! ” Meanwhile, James, 53, observes in amazement: “I can see a big pile there Chris. There are hundreds and hundreds of them. Look at them!”

Adhering to legal protocol, they promptly informed the relevant authorities under the Treasure Act. Arrangements were made for specialist transport to ferry the coins to the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff for expert analysis.

It was on December 28 when Chris said his friend James had initially discovered a handful of coins cast across an unspecified area of the field. He said the noises were similar to those produced by a metal detector upon finding a discarded Coke can. Chris said the coins might have tumbled out of a purse.
