The blaze left homes and vehicles reduced to rubble and charred remains, making Martin certain that his beloved bus, affectionately named “Azul,” was gone for good.

On January 5, just days before the fire, the duo had taken Azul on a surfing trip. Afterward, Martin parked it on a hill near Weinraub’s apartment, as she was still mastering the manual transmission.
When the fire erupted two days later, Weinraub fled with her dog, Bodi, and a few essentials in her primary vehicle. Though saddened by the probable loss of Azul, she felt grateful for her safety and heartbroken for those who lost far more.
Days later, a neighbor sent Weinraub a photo that left her in shock. In the midst of a blackened and desolate landscape, Azul stood untouched, its vibrant blue and white paint glistening as if untouched by the flames.
“I freaked out,” Weinraub said, recounting how she screamed with disbelief while in her bathroom. She quickly called Martin, who shared her amazement and immediately informed his ecstatic mother. “I’ve never cried for a car before,” Tracey Martin texted her son, overwhelmed with relief and emotion.
